Tampa Bay - Saltwater Fishing Report
The wind died down to less than 20 knots, the sun came out and water temperature dropped into the low 70’s. This is good news for area anglers who spent the last two weeks of October on the docks watching whitecaps roil the bay.
Capt. Billy Jordan did some trolling for grouper earlier this week and had no trouble putting fish in the box. He ran the ship’s channel between Bahia Beach and the Skyway, dragging deep diving plugs.
At the end of last week I skipped some pompano on the flats in front of the Simmons Park boat ramp. I got up early the next morning to see if the fish were still there, and indeed they were. I caught three pompano on a banana shaped jig, but I also caught a dozen ladyfish, two flounder, a trout, and a jack crevalle on the same lure. I also got cut off three times by Spanish mackerel.
The following day I went back to the same spot, but didn’t skip any pompano. I met Capt. Mark Thomas on the water, and he said he skipped only a single fish. The ladyfish were still there in force, so I caught one of those and put it on ice. The water clarity improved a bit as soon as the wind let up, and it was clear enough to look for some snook and redfish in the shallows. I found plenty of snook, but they would have nothing to do with the soft plastics I threw at them. Then I found a pod of redfish just south of Symphony Isles in Apollo Beach, and they too ran from the artificial. I put the anchor out, cut up the ladyfish and put out of piece of cutbait on a Rip Tide jig head. Five minutes later I hooked a 26 inch redfish.
