Tampa Bay - Saltwater Fishing Report

Water temperature was 63 degrees in the Gulf on Saturday, and that’s still warm enough for most local species to bite. Snook like it a bit warmer, but it won’t affect trout, redfish, or sheepshead.
Capt. Danny Guarino reported a slow bite in the Little Manatee River during the week. He said they caught a few short snook and some small trout. Bait is getting harder and harder to find outside of the Sunshine Skyway, but it’s still there.
Capt. Chet Jennings spent some time in Apollo Beach this week where he caught lots of silver trout and small jack crevalles on shrimp in and around the hotwater outflow at the Big Bend power plant. Then he saw some terns working the surface and went over to investigate. Turned out to be a school of big pilchards. After loading the livewell with those, he headed for Cockroach Bay where he caught a few redfish and some big trout.
Boat traffic on the Little Manatee River has been light due to cold weather and wind. Water clarity is still excellent despite the rainfall we had overnight several times this past week. I’m seeing a lot of sheepshead under the docks, but no jack crevalles or snook.
I tried to entice the sheepshead with some shrimp I had in the freezer, but they would have none of it. I wish I could figure these fish out because they are big, tasty and convenient. I have little trouble catching them anywhere else on shrimp, but have only ever caught one fish under my dock.
Capt. Billy Jordan caught a couple of grouper trolling deep diving plugs south of the Bahia Beach Reef. That was earlier this week before the weather turned cold and windy once again.
