September Fishing

Capt. Matt Ercoli

Tampa Bay - Saltwater Fishing Report

Tampa Bay To Sarasota Fishing-

Wow this weather really feels great out here on the Island. Lower humidity and a little cooler temperature really have made my days on the water quite pleasant. The heat of the summer doesn't really bother me that much because we usually get a nice sea breeze. Even when it doesn't feel hot it's surprising how it sucks the fluids from your body and wears you down. I just got done riding my bike here on the island and it's amazing how much more enjoyable it is when you take the heat and humidity out of the factor. Alright, enough of the BS, let's get down to business on what's been biting.

The action is really starting to pick up as the water has cooled down. The window that the fish feed on seems to have gotten much larger very quickly. We're getting to that time of year where there is something biting someplace all the time.

Red fishing has really been picking up, Not that we didn't have plenty of Redfish to fish this past month it just seems like they are more eager to bite. Early in August they were here, you just had to get them biting. Now it seems that when you find them you are catching them. Most of the Reds are 30 plus inchers but there are some schools of smaller eating size Reds around as well if you look a little harder. It seems like you either gets large bulls or smaller eating size. The fastest action is on the larger fish, that usually changes as you get more toward October when you get more eating size ones mixed in.

Trout fishing is spectacular right now, they are easy to find and all the 16 to 22 inchers you want to keep and eat. Some days we have been catching keeper Trout till you almost get tired of catching them. The nice thing they are mixed in with some nice size Mackerel that makes for a nice fight and to some, me included, good eating.

We have been getting a few Snook mixed in with the Reds as well, although I haven't been targeting Snook, we did manage a 31 incher last week.

Now I hate to let the cat out of the bag so I'm not going to say a lot about where they are, but the Tarpon are thick and should get even better over the next month. There have already been some very impressive schools out there and as you all know that is my very favorite target.
Offshore there is tons of False Albacore out there, in one day we landed about 10 up 17 pounds on the fly. The Mackerel are mixed in with them as well as some Sharks.

The Snapper bite has had its moments as well if you can keep the Goliath Grouper from eating everyone you hook.

Well I hope you have enjoyed the report. We are coming up on some of my very favorite months of the year to fish on the flats and offshore. Feel free to call anytime if you want to get out or just have some questions. Until next time enjoy your time on the water.
