Big snook are here

Capt. Stewart Ames
June 6, 2022
Tampa Bay - Saltwater Fishing Report

As June arrived, so did the very large breeder female snook of summer. Fish exceeding 40 inches are now in the neighborhood so tackle up a bit to be prepared. These fish will take blistering initial runs, usually followed by a strong secondary run before the angler even begins to think about landing them. In order to land these larger fish, it pays to stay calm once hooked up, as these big fish will capitalize on mistakes such as slack line or erratic rod movements. Do remember also that snook have teeth much like a largemouth bass, but due to their larger weight and extended time it takes to land them, expect leaders to be fragile towards the end of a long fight..and GO EASY bringing the fish to net and don't apply extra pressure just because the fish in close to being netted. Pilchards and grass grunts have been the preferred baits.

Redfishing has been productive on the higher tides with more over slot fish showing up during the last good tide phase. Locating large schools has not been the norm for the last few weeks. Most effective approach has been to find a productive area and to then move down mangrove shorelines casting to all openings and pockets. One area may hold two or three quality fish. Cut baits and pilchards (both whole and cut) have been the baits of choice.

The trout bite has slowed…typical as June arrives. Slot fish are still available on the beach but fish are trending smaller now…16-17 inches and are becoming more scarce. Live pilchards seem to always be the best bait for these. Send them out with no weight and let them swim through the target area. Trout will rarely refuse this offering.

For those targeting tarpon, fish are here in consistent numbers now and are eating crabs, pinfish and grunts. Good luck and good fishing.

Tampa Bay Fishing Forecast:

Snook fishing strong. redfishing equally strong. Trout weakening.

Target Species:

Snook, Redfish, seatrout
