Tampa Bay - Saltwater Fishing Report

The Tampa Bay bite has been sporadic due to the ever fluctuating water temperatures this time of year. Although we are currently getting some pretty cold blasts of air lately, it won't last long. The weather is constantly fluctuating in Florida. We will have a high of 60 degrees one day and then two days later be back up in the 80's. Overall, we've had a pretty warm winter, which means that the fish want to eat live bait. Finding live bait can be pretty challenging this time of year.

Tarpon can be identified using DNA fingerprinting, or "fin printing," techniques. Genetic samples collected by the anglers can be used to determine recapture rates, health, migration, and movements of individual fish. By evaluating these factors on recaptured fish over time, biologists at the FWC's Fish and Wildlife Research Institute and partners at Mote Marine Laboratory can assess the success of tarpon stocks and the connectivity of, or relationship between, tarpon and different bodies of Florida waters. Each year, I participate in the FWC's tarpon genetic recapture study. This year, Cast Away Charters, Inc. obtained the second most DNA samples, returning a total of 136 tarpon DNA samples by the October 31st deadline.
