Tampa Bay - Saltwater Fishing Report

Thank goodness the temperature started climbing back to near normal. Today was not as cold as yesterday but still chilly. Although the temperature was 45 degrees we bundled up an headed north toward Caladesi Island around 8 AM looking for a some trout action. The intent was to fish artificial lures but with the water temperatures still in the 50 I had a feeling they would not eat anything but live or dead baits, if they ate at all. We tossed plastic jerkbaits around for about an hour before deciding to head farther north on some deep water flats and try our luck with live shrimp under a popping cork. There was a light breeze from the Southeast, just enough to make casting comfortable. Shortly after starting the drift we picked up a couple of nice fish both in the low 20 to 22 inch range. They we picked up a few smaller fish and another good trout. After drifting about ¼ mile we moved back to where we started and made another drift. No trout on this run but a nice pompano and several bluefish.

Overall for the trip we kept 7 trout and release 9 or 10. It was not a strong bite but enough to keep you busy.
