Tampa Bay - Saltwater Fishing Report
Fly Fishing the Tampa Bay area continues to provide anglers into the heat of summer. Tarpon fishing has tapered off but we are still flying them when we have a chance. Redfishing is starting to pick up on the flats. Tailing fish in the late afternoons had been good. Night time fishing has provided the most consistent action. There are plenty of hungry redfish, trout, and snook around the lighted docks willing to eat a fly.
Hopefully snook season opening this fall for the first time in 3 years they won't all disappear. Many of the areas that were loaded with snook in the past are still no were near what they used to be. The snook populations have increased each year since the freeze of 2010, but i sill think we need to be careful about this delicate fishery. As I chef i can't disagree on how tasty snook are but there are plenty of other fish out there to harvest for dinner. I think all of us especially guides should be a little more conservative this snook season even if you have the intent to harvest a few.
Thanks to all who fished this tarpon season with me! We had a banner year of fly fishing for tarpon. Looking forward to next season already!
Look for the fall fly fishing to pick up as we head into the next few months. Redfishing will continue to pick up. Many migratory species will be moving into to the area. I would say the fall is the best time for variety. Thanks and get out there and wet a line!
