Tampa Bay June Tarpon Report

Capt. Matt Ercoli
June 18, 2011
Tampa Bay - Saltwater Fishing Report

Tampa Bay June Tarpon Report

Tarpon fishing has been incredible. Some of the largest schools of Tarpon are out there now. I know it has been a while since a report but its peek Tarpon season, my favorite time of year. Basically if the sun is shining I'm on the water Tarpon fishing. Honestly I can't stand to miss even a few hours of it, especially when it this good. So it's really tough for me to find time to sit down a write a fishing report when I am this busy chasing Tarpon.

Today was a very average day as far as things have been going lately. We hooked probably 12 to 15 Tarpon, had one triple hook up and two double hook ups. I think we landed four of them and had several others close. The largest land was 150lbs and we had a 200 pounder strip 300 yards of line leaping and tail walking the whole way before dropping the hook.

The Tarpon fishing has been really strong since they showed the first week of May and the weather has been very cooperative making my job a lot more enjoyable.

I did have a few days where it blew too hard to Tarpon fish, so we did some backwater fishing and had a 40 plus Snook day and plenty of 16 to 18 inch Trout to eat.

That being said, Tarpon is my only real objective this time of year so it has to be blowing pretty good if we have to find other options.

I guess my reports are short this time of year partly because I have little time to write them and for the most part I only cover Tarpon this time of year.

The Tarpon schools this year are the largest that I have seen in my 16 years as a full time fishing guide and fishing for them is looking strong until late July.

I still have a few Tarpon charters available in the evening in June and a few full days left in July. Tarpon should be strong until about the third week of July and will be my primary target to that point.

I hope you have enjoyed my report; I'll try to find time to do another soon.
