Tampa Bay Oct 10 Fishing Report

Capt. Matt Ercoli
October 11, 2013
Tampa Bay - Saltwater Fishing Report

Tampa Bay Oct 10 Fishing Report

October is here, one of my very favorite months of the year. If you have read a lot of my reports in the past you may have heard me talk about why October is one of my favorite, but if not it's pretty simple to see why. The water temp is in the mid 70s, most of our species ideal water temp. Pretty much if it swims in our waters it is feeding. There is a tremendous abundance of bait this month and with winter coming, the fish know it time to fatten up. I believe this is especially true for inshore fish that don't migrate. With the offshore fish that do migrate they are passing our area in full force during October so there is just a tremendous amount of fish in the area that makes for such good fishing. On top of the fact that there is relatively light boat pressure this time of year because there is few anglers in town. Florida in general is just quite this time of year. Great fishing, plus light pressure, and generally great weather make for ideal conditions.

Lately inshore we have been killing the Snook and Redfish. Most are similar in size, 22 to 26 inch average. Some of the larger Snook have been up to 34 inches; I did have one close to 36 inches. Most of the Reds are keeper size but I have had a few moments where I have gotten the bull Reds chummed up and it seemed like we couldn't catch anything under 28 inches. I think that is a good problem to have, especially after we already have our Redfish limit which has been very easy to fill. Trout fishing continually has been getting better. The Trout fishing was a little slower this past summer than the last couple, but we get in those ruts sometime. I think the Trout fishing is getting back to normal with water temperatures dropping. We had a lot of rain this summer so I think it just moved the Trout around a lot more than usual. Although it didn't hurt my Snook and Red fishing, this summer was the best few months of Snook fishing I have had in years.

Offshore things are really starting to happen. A few Kingfish are just starting to appear which is a good sign that it's really about to break loose out there. There is plenty of Mackerel and Tunny around. The Grouper are thick as thieves and there is more Mangrove Snapper than I have ever seen.

In all fishing is very good right now and getting better. It's an exciting time to be on the water. It seems like whichever direction you decide to go is a good one. Bottom line if you where thinking of going fishing quit thinking and go, it's one of the very best times of the year to be out there.

Well I hope you have enjoyed my report. Please feel free to email or call anytime you have questions. Whether you are looking for a charter or just need some fishing info I can help you with. Good luck and have fun on the water.
