Tampa bay tailing reds on fly

Capt. Nick Angelo
September 29, 2008
Tampa Bay - Saltwater Fishing Report

I enjoy finding redfish in skinny water. It's the hunt I like almost as much as catching the fish. I watch the reds for a bit as they tail or push water. Then quietly pole and stalk the fish, to get the angler in front, close enough to present a fly or soft plastic.

The low tides have been providing some great sight- fishing for tailing redfish. Portions of Northern Tampa Bay have been producing some good fly trips for reds. The fish tail better when it's overcast or lightly raining. But I have found them tailing in the middle of the day with high sun as well.

For fly fishing I use a long leader with a piece of 20# flouro tippet. Small quarter size toad flies with bead chain eyes have been the prefered flies. I use extra small leads in windy conditions. I like to fire a little brown toad into the middle of the school and give it two little hops. That will usually result in a hook up and a smile on an anglers face.

Tampa Bay Fishing Forecast:

Tides this week will be good to find schools of tailing reds. Good luck! Capt Nick Angelo
