Tampa Bay - Saltwater Fishing Report
Well tarpon season is in full swing now and it's been two weeks since the tarpon showed up, right on time this year. Wow is there a lot of fish out there. On my first day of sight fishing I saw literally thousands of fish. There were schools of fish everywhere, and in large numbers. Most of the schools that I have been sight fishing these past two weeks have had hundreds of fish in them. The water was super clear so the first week they where a little finicky, but the sheer numbers of fish make up the difference. The last couple of days we've had a lot of rain so that should ding the water just enough to make the bite faster. So every day but one day we have landed tarpon, the day we didn't land a fish we hooked 5 that got off so we definitely had our chances. So for now we are 100 percent on hook ups. Most of the days out we are landing 2 to 4 fish which is good standard tarpon fishing for this time of year. This season has really started out strong and I'm looking forward to the next couple of months of tarpon fishing. I spend almost every day high in my tower, May through July tarpon fishing, as everyone knows is my personal preference. Although it's a lot harder work for me than an average day of snook and red fishing on the flats, I just get a lot more gratification from it. As a guide I find it more challenging and more exciting than anything I do. Now that being said, I did take a day off from tarpon fishing and took a pair of fishermen snook fishing one day last week. By 1pm two fishermen had landed at least 50 snook and 25 mackerel. We left them biting. So tarpon certainly is not the only thing biting.
