Big Trout Remain Strong, Redfish Beginning to Show

Capt. Stewart Ames
February 23, 2017
Tampa Bay - Saltwater Fishing Report

Unseasonably warm weather remained the rule and large seatrout seem to appreciate it. Fishing for the larger winter spotted seatrout has ben as good this year as any in recent memory with limit catches continuing to be the norm. Whitebait has been available all winter and, at this point, will probably be here for the rest of the year. This remains the primary bait but large shrimp and small pinfish will work to secure limits as well. It will just take a little longer. Over the course of the last two weeks, larger redfish have begun to appear, either as solos or in small groups. The trick is finding them as, once located, a small to medium sized pinfish is unlikely to be refused. Fishing potholes on open flats have produced fish in the 25 to 28 inch range. Fishing residential docks has also been productive, although the average size fish is smaller. These locations will provide the occasional bonus black drum or sheephead however as long as shrimp is used for bait.

Nearhsore waters, inside of 40 feet, are continuing to provide action on mangrove snapper, grunts and the occassional hogfish. Although these fish aren't the largest of quarry, they are entertaining to catch and provide great table fare. Good luck and good fishing.
