West Central Fly Fishing and Light Tackle Report - Tampa Bay - N

Capt. Ethan Kiburz
December 14, 2024
Tampa Bay - Saltwater Fishing Report

As we transition through the cooler months, Tampa Bay's waters are experiencing notable temperature shifts. Post-front conditions have brought water temperatures down to the 60-degree range, but the mercury steadily climbs to 70 degrees within a few days of sunny weather. These fluctuations are critical for anglers to consider when planning their outings.

Clear skies and calm winds following a cold front create ideal sight fishing conditions. Redfish and spotted sea trout are actively cruising the shallows, especially during these bright, sunny days. Fly anglers and light tackle enthusiasts can capitalize on these conditions by focusing on flats with clean, shallow water.

The current moon phases are producing significant negative low tides during the morning hours. These tides confine fish to deeper potholes, channels, and areas that retain water. This concentration makes it easier to locate schools of fish, but stealth and precision are key. Approach these areas quietly to avoid spooking your targets.

Matching the Hatch: Small Mud Crabs and Shrimp

The primary forage for redfish and trout in Tampa Bay right now includes small mud crabs and shrimp. Fly anglers should opt for patterns that mimic these food sources, such as:

Crab Patterns: Merkin-style or small epoxy crabs in natural colors on a #4 or #6.
Shrimp Patterns: Tan or olive shrimp imitations with realistic movement tied on a #4 or #2.

For light tackle anglers, soft plastic shrimp or crab imitations rigged weedless or on a jig head are excellent choices. Keep your presentations subtle and natural to match the slower metabolism of fish in cooler water.

Pro Tips for Success
Timing Is Everything: Plan your trip around the warming trend a few days post-front for the most active fish.
Focus on Structure: Target areas like oyster bars, mangrove edges, and sandy potholes where fish are likely to congregate. "Features"
Stay Stealthy: Use a push pole or trolling motor to navigate quietly, especially when in a fishing posture.
Adjust Your Retrieve: Slow down your presentation and downsize your offering to match the lethargic behavior of fish in cooler water.
