The heat is on!

Capt. Jeff Legutki

Ten Thousand Islands - Saltwater Fishing Report

The sizzling days of summer are here. With air temps in the mid 90's, to water temps in the upper 80's, the bite only last the first couple hours of light.

There is still plenty of tarpon around. You should be at your first spot before the sunrise! The first hour you can find plenty of rolling fish willing to eat a well presented offering, whether its a fly or an artificial lure the strike can be unforgettable!
Tarpon can be found in the back country or along the beaches, from 5 lb. juvenile fish back in the rivers to triple digit beast running in packs along the coast.

Snook fishing is hot right now, with alot of giant females along the beaches and passes due to the spawn. Higher tides push the snook along the beaches providing excellent sight fishing opportunities.

The normal routine right now is tarpon at first light with a low incoming tide. As the sun and the tide climb higher we move out to the beaches and sightfish for snook and reds. By 11:00 am it time to beat the heat and get off the water.

This is also a great time of year to fish at night. Snook fishing the lighted residential docks provides endless action with snook, tarpon, jacks, and ladyfish. Great action for the younger generation. 7-8 wt. flyrods and small white flies is all you need to get the job done.

With little to no pressure, the fish are very active. The waters are pretty much empty with traffic, the fish are relaxed and eager to eat. So get out and beat the heat and enjoy some of the finest fishing Florida has to offer!
