"Hurricane Blues"

Ten Thousand Islands - Saltwater Fishing Report

Well everyone knows of the weather we have had for the past month. It has been one close call after another with these storms passing so close! To say the least the weather has been a little erratic! Not the blistering hot calm sultry days we are used too.

Lots off run off rain water keeping everyone pretty close to the outside. The inside is very tannic and the water is almost fresh.

When the weather cooperates, the fishing has been really good for redfish. They seem to be schooling up and moving in everywhere from Goodland, north to Pine Island. These fish are very aggressive when you find them. Some schools can hold up to 100 fish sometimes in certain areas.

Depending on where you're fishing just about any technique will work. When I am on the flats in P.I. or Estero, I prefer the topwater plugs at first light. Its hard to see the actual fish so you're casting to "pushing wakes" the topwater plug enables you to make long cast on a light spinning rod and cover lots of water. When visibility is better I go to my favorite style, "flyfishing". Like I said these fish are pretty aggressive so the will take just about any pattern. I prefer baitfish patterns so they can be worked at a faster pace. The "meat whistle" in pearl has been working well so far, and its pretty durable.

When we have our typicle calm mornings, you can run the beaches and fing tarpon on the bait schools, or in the mouth of any inlet. Plug, jig, fly, or bait can be used. When the bite is on you know it! The same goes for the snook, all the passes are holding alot of snook, as well as along the beaches. You want the water to be on the higher side preferably incoming tide for sightfishing along the beach.

This past month has been touch and go weather wise due to all the storms which has been dictating the water clarity. The day before these storms hit, the fishing is always good due to the extreme pressure change and then seems to shut down after for several days.

Until my next report, everyone be safe and watch the weather! We have been lucky so far, especially with IKE so keep your fingers crossed the season is half way over! Tight lines and screaming drags to all!
