Mild winter feels like an early spring to come

Capt. Jeff Legutki
February 9, 2011
Ten Thousand Islands - Saltwater Fishing Report

Fortunately, our winter has been a mild one, unlike everywhere else in the Nation. I heard the other day that Fl. was the only state in the country with no snow.
So where is all the frozen fisherman?
Season has been a bit slower for everyone for unknown reasons, whether it is due to the economy, or for the media pushing false images to the viewers as far as the fish kill from the freeze last year. Or that the oil spill from BP has covered the Gulf in petroleum.

So many good weather days the past 2 months for a client to have a time of their life go to waste. (Well not really, because I took advantage of them to yank on a few myself!) Only to have the one-day client to fish through a cold front cause that's his only window of opportunity. Always want the best weather for the clients, but that's the gamble on a one day booking.

The fact is, this year has produced some of the best red fish fishing I have seen in over a decade! Reds have been so cooperative and abundant I have not put a lot of time into snook fishing.

The average red for the past two months is at 7 pounds, which is a great hefty red! Yet we have been catching some true giants for this area as well, up to 15 pounds. All sight fishing!

Recently, past 10 days we have had exceptionally warm weather with southerly winds. The snook have been noticing the change and have been popping up a lot more on the flats. Been seeing a lot of big breeder size females(survivors), yet have shown their wisdom with size making them pretty tough to convince into eating the fly.

Great to see so many quality snook, a promising sign for the future.

With the warm stretch last week, a few tarpon started to show. Signs of an early spring to come. Had a couple days with some surprising opportunities as well, and even put a couple into the air.

Tarpon season is filling up, so don't hesitate if you're are thinking of coming down. Snook fishing is getting better everyday, and the reds are still leading the show!

Ten Thousand Islands Fishing Forecast:

Snook fishing is about to explode, and by the time you are reading this, some one is on the bow with his knees shaking at the shot in front of him right now. This is the best time of year to catch a giant snook on the fly or artificial.
Tarpon are slowly becoming targets now and will increase as the spring gets closer.
This is the best time of year to catch the "grand slam"
Call and book a charter now and experience some of the greatest shallow water sight fishing you can find!

More Fishing Reports:

Come fish the 10,000 Islands and the Everglades National Park for tarpon, snook, red fish and more with either flyrods or light tackle. All artificial no live bait, geared for two anglers. Fly through the shallows in a Hellsbay Whipray. Fishing with the finest equiptment like Sage fly rods and Bauer reels or St. Croix spin rods and Quantum reels. Sight fishing is my passion! Target the toughest saltwater species in mere inches of water and fool them into eating year round.
