Redfish and Snookj in the shallows

Capt. Jeff Legutki

Ten Thousand Islands - Saltwater Fishing Report

Sightfishing in the 10,000 Islands and the Everglades has been nothing short of stellar! Redfish and snook are warming themselves in the shallows over the soft muddy bottoms.

This time of year is probably the best time to sightfish the gamefish of the Everglades. The severe cold fronts of winter have not began to move all the way throught the south. Yet we are having Northerly winds making the the days very comfortable. The fronts we do have are very mild with very light winds. The waters are clear, making sightfishing easier, although the clear water can make these fish extremely spooky.

Past couple weeks have been great to say the least, yet the fish are skittish. Your normal steamer pattern and strip has been getting either ignored, or blowing the fish out making them run to the other side of the bay.

The solution we have figured out is to lengthen our leaders to 10 -12 foot with 20 pound flourocarbon leaders. The patterns are smaller of course, crab and shrimp patterns have been the goto. To feed the fish properly, I 've been instucting my clients to cast several feet ahead of the fish and to get the pattern in the path of the fish. Let the fly settle to the bottom, when the fish is about a foot away from the fly, hop the fly once, or slowly drag the crab on the bottom and the fish will pounce upon them! If we strip the fly in the normal fashion the fish show no interest. Like they will not waste the energy to chase the food down, concerving their energy to stay warm.

Waste no time, call to book a charter and fool some of the craftiest gamefish in the 10,000 Islands and the Everglades. A day on the water makes a great X-mas gift, call for gift certificates for a friend or loved one.

Thank you to all my clients for making this a fantastic year, look forward to the upcoming year towards our next adventure. Tight lines and screaming drags to all!
