Ten Thousand Islands - Saltwater Fishing Report

9/20/05 Pine Island-10,000 Islands
The summer is coming to an end and fall is on the way.And the fish are aware of this, as they start to move from the outside beaches and passes to the middle islands and backwater bay's looking for their winter haunts. Now that the summer spawn is over, the fish are looking to feed and fatten up for the upcoming winter.
School of red fish are starting the fall off like they do every year. You can find them everywhere, from the passes and beaches down in Naples and the 10,000 Islands area, or on the inside flats and grass beds from Estero north to Pine Island. It's not uncommon to hear people catching 30 -50 fish a day from the same spot.
Last weekend I fished in the Calusa Summer Slam, out of Punta Rassa in Pine Island. Red tide has been present and we saw schools of redfish 200-300 strong flooding the flats with the incoming tide. The fish were moving fast, but we still caught numerous fish on pichards and top water plugs. All fish were over the slot, with the biggest fish of the pack in front leading the way.
Like I said the redtide has been a major facter the past couple of weeks. Snook fishing on the beaches has been slow, but in the back, bigger fish are starting to appear taking jerkbaits as well as flies.
There are alot of smaller tarpon in the back country creeks in the 10,000 Islands. Willing to take a well placed fly or jerk bait every chance it gets! These little guys range from 5lbs. to 30lbs. and love the bends in a creek. Usually rolling on the outside edge over the deepest spot in the turn. Enter slow and quietly and make as long as a cast as you can. This way you can work over the area with out spooking the fish in these tight little quarters.
Its starting to cool down a little, making for a nice day on the water. Get out enjoy yourself before the crowds start to filter in. So until the next time, tight lines and screaming drags to all!
