Southwest Florida - Naples, Marco, 10,000 Islands

Ten Thousand Islands - Saltwater Fishing Report

Fishing report Naples - 10,000 Islands

January 11,2006

Winter fishing is in full effect. Sunday the 8th, I woke up to 39 degrees and a layer of ice on my flats boat. Holy cow, this is supposed to be SW Florida.

This time of year you can't beat the jig and shrimp combo! On the outside grassflats and deeper channel are slap full of fish. The negative low tides that come with winter confine all the fish in the channels competing for food. The flats are completly dry on the new and full moons. A slow retreive will get you anything from pompano, trout, redfish, lady fish, bluefish and plenty more. On the warmer days we are still finding a few snook, nothing large but the numbers can be there.

On the warmer days in between fronts, sight fishing has been ideal! Now this is the type of fishing that take patience, it's alot like hunting. Gin clear water and a light breeze make for spooky fish. Long cast are in order for success. If your a fly fisherman, you need 60 -70 feet with minimal false cast. In this situation, the ultralight spinning tackle is the easy way to go. A 7 1/2 ft St. Croix Tidemaster will toss a free lined shrimp a country mile with 10 lb. Power Pro! Easy way for the beginner to get introduced to sight fishing.

Red fish and sheephead are all ovr the flats right now. Last week we saw schools of redfish huddled togeather on the grass flats and brown bottoms. Trying to keep warm soaking up the warmth of the shallows in the afternoons. Small shrimp and crab patterns have been succesful for the flyfisherman, and the brown skimmer jigs or free lined shrimp or gold spoon for the spin fisherman.

Another option on the nice days, when the winds are calm is to run the crab traps off the beaches for triple tail. Pick the traps that have the most growth on the lines. Once again the freelined shrimp is all you need.

Fishing this time of year can be good as long as you get out on the very best day. Weather predicts everything so check before you go.
