Ten Thousand Islands - Saltwater Fishing Report

Time to break out the flyrod
This is the transitional period for us down here in the 10,000 Islands. Wind direction is changing from South to North, the tides are starting to get more dramatic as we move closer to winter.
One of the good parts is that the water is starting to clear up. Let the sight fishing begin. This a great time of year to whip out the ole flyrod. Bait is thinning out and the fish are starting to focus on smaller prey like crustaceans.
A leeward island and the last of the outgoing tide and your in the place to start. Snook are holding on the edge of the trees and the redfish are running the edges of oyster encrusted shorelines. As the tide rises look for flooded oyster bars and troughs running along a flat.
Choice of fly depends on the surroundings and color of the water. If there is alot of small fry baitfish around and the water is clear, try something small white with flash like a polar fibre minnow or a white and chartuece clouser. Muddlers work well in shallow stained water in either brown or black. These colors will stand out well and make alot of comotion as you stip the fly into motion.
Remember as the water start to cool off, to slow down your presentation. And start to think warm, fish the sunny shorelines and look for activity.
If the flyrod is not your weapon of choice, its perfect time for the ultra light spinning gear.A jig will catch everything around. Look out onto the grass flats and you will find a little bit of everything. If you can see birds working then let them lead you to the action. On the coldest days look to the deep holes and work at a snails pace. Once you find the fish, they usually tend to scool up and congregate. Some times you can sit at the same hole and catch fish after fish for hours.
Until the next report, tight lines and screaming drags to all.
