Ten Thousand Islands - Saltwater Fishing Report

A busmans holiday
I had the pleasure of fishing with my old friend/mentor in Naples monday morning. Tom Shadely, the owner of the exclusive Mangrove Outfitters Flyshop in Naples.
Flyfishing was the name of the game. A 7wt Sage Z-Axis and Bauer Superlites were the weapon's of choice. Flies of choice was the triple threat in white/chartuece and black. Its kinda like a sea ducer and a redfish candy combo.
The morning was perfect with no wind, and the last two hours of the outgoing tide, ideal conditions! The water was semi clear at about 86 degrees.
We started out in a cove that was catching the outgoing currents that were trapping schools of glass minnows and finger mullet. With in the first 50 feet I lost a 30 inch snook by fault of someones knot( but I won't mention any names) and landed a beautiful 28" redfish. So then Tom took the bow and started disecting the shoreline with the precion of a surgeon. I witnessed him toss a fly 10 feet back through a hole no bigger than 30 inches around, as the fly hopped its way out, the water errupted. The Bauer was singing as the fishes first run took Tom into the backing. Some how Tom manages the fish to roll over only to see a yellow tail about the sice of a football. A snook of that size is not a common catch for Naples, especially on the fly. After about five minutes of nerve racking runs towards the mangrove roots we slide the 37" beast over the gunnels. That is a true trophy in my book especially on a 7 wt. Good job Tom.
We finished the day with several smaller snook and a few jacks. By 9;30 the heat was on and we were headed back to the dock. Its days like this that brings you back for more, hopeing for a repeat!
