Ten Thousand Islands - Saltwater Fishing Report

A change in season!
Each morning you can feel a change in the air! Winds have been from the north east every morning, and the water temp is in the low 80's. You can see flocks of birds flying south and the other day I saw my first group of white pelicans which signify winter is on its way.
The past several weeks I have been concentrating on the outside points and beaches. New species are filling in on the ever present schools of bait fish. I'm starting to catch bluefish, and mackeral and the farther out you go you can run into kingfish and schools of bonita. A sure sign that the migration has started from cooling waters to the north.
With all this taking place, its time to start pushing farther back into the internal bays of the backcountry in the 10K Islands and the Everglades. As the water temps keep falling fish will be seeking the warmer waters in the shallow coves. I like the winter season for flyfishing. No more need for the early rise to beat the heat and the fishing window stays open longer!
Next month the water will be in the mid 70's and start to clear up creating awesome sight fishing, my true passion! More fish will be present along the sunny shorelines gathering heat from the looking for an easy meal. The water levels will be lower and making it easy to find the roaming snook and red fish.
As the bait starts to push farther offshore, it will be time to start downsizing our baits, with shrimp and crab patterns the main forage. The metabolism of the fish will slow down as well as our presentations!
Hopefully we will have a mild winter with the coldfronts spaced farther apart and the wind will not become to strong. Clean, clear, low water, a fly fishermans dream! So book a trip and enjoy some of the world's finest flyfishing. Tight lines and screaming drags to all!
