Southwest Florida - Naples, Marco, 10,000 Islands

Ten Thousand Islands - Saltwater Fishing Report

First cold front of the season!

Well we just received our first cold front of the season to come. I like the negative tides and northerly winds! It brings clean water and plenty of sight fishing oppertunities!

Yesterday I had the pleasure to fish two orthodontist from Va. and Wn. Ed and Jim were great guys here for a dental convention.

We had a negative tide to start the day with and an incoming tide. We poled up a narrow creek that led to an isolated cove blocked by the northerly winds, The water was no deeper than a foot and crystal clean. As we reached the opening to the cove I could see a big red fish warming himself on a sandbar 80 feet away. What a sight! We tried several cast, yet the fish would not react, almost lathatgic looking. We proceeded to get shots at several snook up to 30 inches and three other redfish plus an over sized red I estimated between 18 - 20 pounds! Fish started to take our crab patterns as the sun warmed up the water. We sightfished 3 reds up to 29 inches and five snook under the slot! I love sightfishing this time of year!!!!!!!

As the day progressed and the tide kept rising we moved to a grass flat with numerous covered oyster bars. We put the fly rods away and started throwing gulp shrimp on 1/16 oz. jigs and proceeded to catch several more reds, numerous jacks and ladyfish! One real nice trout about 24 inches.

I found the day to be a success for the conditions, and Jim and Ed had a great time! Lots of laughter and bent rods made the full day fly by. Its sight fishing season and the long rods are the weapon of choice for the skittish fish in the shallows!

Until my next report, tight lines and screaming drags to all!

Capt. Jeff

More Fishing Reports:

Come fish the 10,000 Islands and the Everglades National Park for tarpon, snook, red fish and more with either flyrods or light tackle. All artificial no live bait, geared for two anglers. Fly through the shallows in a Hellsbay Whipray. Fishing with the finest equiptment like Sage fly rods and Bauer reels or St. Croix spin rods and Quantum reels. Sight fishing is my passion! Target the toughest saltwater species in mere inches of water and fool them into eating year round.
