Summer Rains have started

Capt. Jeff Legutki

Ten Thousand Islands - Saltwater Fishing Report

Well it seems like the sky has opened up and dropped heavy rains on us for the past several days non stop. This has definetly had an impact on he fishing. The salinity levels have changed causing the fish to move.

The outside has been consistent with snook and tarpon along the beaches, and there are a few redfish on the backside of the barrier islands. With all the freshwater runoff the water looks like coffee. Sightfishing in the backcountry will only be possible on the lowest outgoing tides.

The early morning bite has been the best, tapering off by 10:30 it seems. Its important to be on the water before the sun comes up. Rolling tarpon will be in their usual spots, gulping air and showing their presence. Fly fishing for the guys is a blast, literally! I have been playing around with topwater fly patterns like the gurglers and crease flies. The little tarpon ranging from 5 - 30 pounds are smashing these patterns, missing it most of the time but fun and exciting non the less!

On the calmer days when the water settles, snook fishing along the beach has been fantastic. Small white flies like the "DT" or the light bulb has been working well. The higher half of the tide will be the time to be there as they roam the edges in search of food.

At night, fishing the lights has been good as well. You can find everything under the urban dock lights from snook, tarpon, jacks, snapper, to trout. Its nice to beat the heat and fish these lonely waters all to yourself.

Summer is here, the crowds are gone and the fishing is good. Reminds me of the good ole days! Tight lines and screaming drags to all!
