Summer is upon us

Capt. Jeff Legutki

Ten Thousand Islands - Saltwater Fishing Report

Well the early heat signifies that summer is upon us now. There is more of a breeze than usual, which makes it a little more comfortable and keeps the bugs down a bit. Water temps in the low to mid 80's. And the past three days we have had late afternoon rain, or should I say drizzle.

Snook fishing has been good on the outside on the higher half of the tide, and in the back at the lower half. Great sight fishing can be down on the beaches in the afternoon when its just too hot everywhere else. And the night fishing is getting better every day as summer progresses.

Tarpon are around and are happy to show themselves on the calmest mornings. I am finding descent numbers of smaller fish in the 10 to 50 lb. range. Great fish on the flyrod. Most of the bigger fish have moved to the north for the big spawn in Boca Grande. There are a few around in the triple digit class, but most of those monsters are off the beaches in deeper water. The best way to connect with these guys is with live or cut bait on the outside.

Redfish can be found in the back at the lower tide stages in quiet coves. Muddler style flies have been the ticket for me, I have been fishing the skinniest water I can find this time of year with patches of grass. Crab patterns as well will take their fair share, but this is for sight fishing alone, not a good fly for beating the bushes blind casting.

The heat is on and the waters are empty with all the tourist gone back home. Fishing is great and its complete solitude out there. All you hear is fish popping and mosquitos buzzing. Absolute heaven for this native. Tight lines and screaming drags to all who venture out!

Come fish the 10,000 Islands and the Everglades National Park for tarpon, snook, red fish and more with either flyrods or light tackle. All artificial no live bait, geared for two anglers. Fly through the shallows in a Hellsbay Whipray. Fishing with the finest equiptment like Sage fly rods and Bauer reels or St. Croix spin rods and Quantum reels. Sight fishing is my passion! Target the toughest saltwater species in mere inches of water and fool them into eating year round.
