Typical March is blowing through!

Ten Thousand Islands - Saltwater Fishing Report

Well, the first two week of March were as perfect as a March could be. Now we are getting the typical winds that usually come along with March.

The fishing was on fire before this big high pressure moved over the state. During the calmer days the water temps were up in the upper 70's providing excellent fishing! Yet the past week has been a blustery one. Stable winds up to 20 mph has made fishing a little tougher.

With all the wind the water temps are back down to the upper 60's and by afternoon you might find a few calm pockets with warmer temps in the low 70's. It has made finding fish a little tougher, more running around to find a comfortable lee for the flyfisherman.

Snook are still feeding, yet you have to work for it. Tight cast under the bush will pull out invisible snook that you couldn't see. Most of the snook this week in the wind have been your typical under-slot fish. I have seen bigger fish yet it seems they are a little reluctant to feed.

The tarpon that were around have settled to the bottom, making it hard to target them with a fly or artificial. They are still around waiting for the winds to lighten up and the temps to rise again. We have been seeing some smaller guys in the creeks up to 10 - 15 lbs.

The best thing that has happened in the last week is the number of redfish that have showed up. We have been getting our fare share of slot size Reds with a few over the slot. On one of the warmer mornings I had a client throwing a top water plug that got smashed by a 32" red. It hit the plug so hard I thought it was a snook. Awesome sight to witness, seeing a red come half way out of the water to get on top of the plug!!

To sum it all up fishing is good, let the wind settle down and it will get even better. The winter species are still around, such as pompano & sea trout over the grass flats and cobia and kingfish off the beaches.

Call and book a trip to get in on some of the best saltwater flyfishing the country has to offer. And as weather improves the fishing will get even better.
