Ten Thousand Islands - Saltwater Fishing Report

Well this has not been our typical May. Here it is mid May and the water temp barely gets to 80 by mid afternoon. I think I broke the first sweat today for the year, it has not been muggy and humid and the bugs aren't bad neither. Not your average May to say the least.
May is usually my favorite month, the best month to get a "Slam" or even a "Grand Slam" (tarpon, snook, red fish, and trout) on fly or plug.
The tarpon have been hit and miss as far as the back country fish. Several days total this season I actually found and caught fish. So far most of the time theyeither ignore it and show no interest or sink out of sight. I would have to say this tarpon season has sucked for the most part! The boys who can get outside are getting a few fish on bait for the most part, yet the back bays are not getting their normal numbers of fish.
Snook and red fish have been very cooperative if I can find the right situation. The tides are not as low this time of year making my sight fishing window fairly short. It seem to be the right tide when you don't have enough light, and then you do the tides to high! Arrrgh!!!!!!!
I have been mostly fly fishing this season and haveing some great days, but more tough days than good days. Plug fishing at first light is getting better each day. Today,Rob Taylor caught a 32" and a 28" redfish plus a 27" snook all on top water chuggers. Awesome explosive strikes around first light. Fly fishing is my passion, but you can't beat a huge redfish like that blasting a top water plug, coming above the water, pouncing on these things......absolutely unreal!! Its these brief moments that keep me going through all the slow days, looking for that next explosion!
Ten Thousand Islands Fishing Forecast:

We need it to get hot and muggy, with no- see-ums chewing us alive for the tarpon to get consistent! I never thought I would ever look forward to those two particular conditions!!! Tight lines and screaming drags!
Target Species:

Anything that will eat a fly or top water plug!!!
