The azalea bush in my mom's front yard has blossoms opening. The red maples are starting to flower. Harbingers of the coming spring, the great rebirth where hope springs eternal!
Hey, we had some nice days this past week. While I still don't have much work I did have a trip yesterday. That of course required scouting. Wednesday morning Tom Van Horn and I plied the waters of the Mosquito Lagoon, searching for fish. We found some.
We found a large school of black drum. We didn't have any bait but Tom got two strikes on a DOA Shrimp. He missed both.
We found a spot that has a lot of reds and trout mixed. Still tossing the shrimp Tom had better success at this place, getting five or six trout to about 20 inches and three reds too, all on a chartreuse DOA Shrimp. There were a couple more fish hooked and lost, but it was a good stretch at that place.
We checked a couple other spots and saw fish in both, but did not get another bite. Still, the mission was accomplished, as we found fish for our upcoming charters.
Yesterday Van and Jane Saylor joined me for a six hour trip. We had spin rods, even some live shrimp. The black drum were nowhere to be found. I saw one small one the entire time, and he didn't bite. Of course it was a different day, and the weather was different. It was a nice enough day today, but the day Tom and I were out there was hardly any wind. That was not the case today.
The spot Tom and I found the bitey fish still held them. Van was tossing a four inch DOA CAL jerkbait and Jane a clear/gold glitter DOA Shrimp. They got numerous reds and trout, although most of the fish were short. We could see the fish in the slot and kept throwing to them, even with the live shrimp. They just kept saying no. We probably got a dozen each of reds and trout, but only one of each in their respective slots. So we caught plenty of fish, but they were all small. Still, I've certainly had worse days!
Life is short- GO FISHING!
And life is great and I really love my work!
