It was cold this week by any measure except an Arctic winter. All my tomato and papaya plants are dead. It was below freezing on a succession of nights. My roof was frosty every morning for a week. So when Shawn Healy and I got to Haulover Canal Thursday morning I was not surprised to see dead fish. There were also dead pelicans, and lots of dead sea turtles. I had no idea there were so many sea turtles in the lagoons. Now most of them are dead. It's very sad.
The air was cool and there were a few clouds but the wind was light and it was actually quite a nice day. Shawn and I headed down to the south end of the Mosquito Lagoon in the Mitzi. The water has gotten very low, typical winter water levels.
We saw lots of pelicans and gulls but no fish of any kind except those lying dead on the bottom. As we worked our way north though, we started finding fish, live ones, first mullet, and then redfish. We saw a few seatrout and black drum as well.
We tried lures and in the place with the most redfish, mullet chunks. Shawn got a small red on a jerkbait, which was the only bite we got.
I can't say that we worked it real hard, but I can't say the fish were very cooperative, either. Since the water temperatures were probably hovering a little below 50 degrees that wasn't very surprising. Actually I was happy to find as many fish as we did, whether they were biting or not.
The lowest forecast temperature for the coming week is 48, and the forecast high is 75, so the water temperature should be climbing into the high 50s or low 60s. The fish will start to bite. And I have a trip booked for Saturday so I'll have to go scouting at least one day.
