Upcoming Events:
There is a Space Shuttle launch scheduled for 8:30 AM February 12th. I still have this day open. This is an opportunity to get a day's fishing in and see the launch at the same time. If you time it right we can get a photo of you holding a nice redfish with the rocket going up behind you! Call 407.977.5207 now to reserve this date.
We didn't do a lot of fishing this week.
Sunday Rich Hanke and his friend Paul joined me for a five hour day on the Mosquito Lagoon. The weather had been cold and windy, and while it was chilly Sunday morning, the sun was out and the air was still. The fish were everyplace.
Rich started with a chartreuse, three inch DOA Shrimp. Paul started with a four inch DOA jerkbait. After we released Rich's third fish and Paul didn't yet have a bite I switched his bait to a chartreuse, three inch DOA Shrimp. The first fish he caught was the day's largest, a fat ten pound red. We got another red or two, and Rich got a gorgeous, nine pound seatrout. This fish had a large mullet tail sticking out of his throat, but ate Rich's shrimp with gusto!
We eventually got pushed off the fish by two aluminum boats that were using trolling motors to aggressively pursue the schools. I saw those guys get one fish between them. Chasing fish until they are fleeing in terror is not a very good catching strategy.
We went on the opposite side of the lagoon to a small spot that we had to ourselves. There were quite a few fish there and we got three more before heading back to Beacon 42. I was home in time for the football game!
Monday Maxx and I went to the St. Johns River for some shad fishing. We got there about noon. Although the sun was out it was cold and windy. We fished around the mouth of the Econ for two hours and had one bite between us, which was a shad I got on a small, unweighted freshwater trout streamer. There was another fly fisher there who got one on a yellow fly. We also saw him get one sunfish. It was real slow, kind of cold, real windy, and we bailed out about 2:30.
Tuesday and Wednesday it was real cold for central Florida, below freezing at night. My papaya trees died!
Thursday I hopped a jet and flew to beautiful Newark, NJ to attend the Somerset Fly Fishing Show. I sat and tied flies for most of two and a half days, great for inventory! Many wonderful people stopped by to chat. Some were old clients, or people who have my books, and other tyers or people interested in fishing central Florida. I walked the floor a little myself and picked up some new fly ideas. There are some brilliant tyers at that show, just great talents. I write this I the Newark Liberty Airport, waiting to catch my flight home. I will be glad to get out of this freezing weather.
Yesterday Brian Graves joined me for a day's fishing on the Mosquito Lagoon. The weather was spectacular and we saw a lot of fish. They were not eating. We saw zero tailers, very strange considering the conditions. Brian ot two reds on a DOA CAL jig, and missed two or three strikes. At the end of the day we found a school of big redfish but they weren't eating any better than any of the other ones had been. We didn't get one. It was cool seeing all those big, honkin' fish, though!
Life is short- GO FISHING!!!
Life is great and I love my work!
