Titusville - Saltwater Fishing Report

Mosquito Lagoon/N. Indian River report 4/23

Space Coast fishing report from Spotted Tail, 4/23/06

Now booking tarpon trips for May and June along the Lee County Coast!

Reader Stephen L. Baker called and asked me, "If Cajun Red line disappears in the water, why do Bleeding Bait hooks stimulate strikes?" If any readers can come up with a good answer for this I'll enter their names in this week's raffle for a Spotted Tail Prize Pack. Email your response to me at [email protected].

Fishing, ah yes, there was some this week. And the weather was awesome, just great!

Monday- David Olsen, the Viking fisherman from West Bend, Wisconsin, joined me for a day of canoe fishing/wading in the Indian River Lagoon. David has this cute little telescoping pack rod. He cast a 1/4 ounce gold Johnson Minnow with it and got five reds to about 20 pounds and I don't know how many trout to about 22 inches. He had quite a day. I got a couple smallish reds on a DOA Glow Shrimp and then went to the fly rod. Using an Electric Sushi I got eight or so trout to about 20 inches and a black drum (sight fished) of about 18 pounds.

Wednesday- John Imbt and John Imbt, a father/son team from Pennsylvania, joined me on the Spotted Tail for a day's fishing on the Mosquito Lagoon. John Imbt the younger started the day off by getting a ten pound red that was tailing on a shallow flat. He was using a fly he tied that was something like a Borski Slider. Then John Imbt the elder missed a fish on a 5.5 inch DOA CAL jerk bait. Then he got a slot red on the same lure. Then he got a trout on a Chug Bug. Then the younger Imbt got another slot red on his fly. Then he got a hardhead catfish on the same fly! Then I got a flounder on a DOA Glow Shrimp. We didn't see a lot of fish anywhere we looked, but saw some fish in all places but one. We did quite a bit of looking, and it was hardly hot and heavy, but we had a good time.

Thursday- David Olsen, the Viking fisherman from West Bend, Wisconsin, joined me for a day of kayak fishing/wading in the Mosquito Lagoon. There were quite a few fish around. David was using a RipTide Weedless jig head with a Gulp attached. I was using a black Redfish Worm fly. We got five reds and eight black drum between us, getting fairly steady opportunities all day long.

Friday- Tom Mitzlaff, Mr. Mitzi Skiff himself, joined me for a day of kayak fishing on the Mosquito Lagoon. It was pretty good again, with fish tailing and waking in water that hardly covered them. We got five reds to 28 inches and five trout to 24 inches between us, all on fly, and were off the water by about 130 PM.

Remember- life is short. GO FISHING!

Life is great and I love my work!!
