Mosquito Lagoon report 5/7/06

Mosquito Lagoon fishing report from Spotted Tail, 5/7/06

Now booking tarpon trips for May and June along the Lee County Coast!

I had Thursday off and used some of that day to disassemble, clean, grease, and reassemble my tarpon fly reels. Tarpon time is here, gentlemen! I can't wait to cast to those big, bad boys! And my sources tell me the fish are IN!

The website report sports some photos this week. Visit this link to see them:

On Tuesday morning Cliff Horner, a fly fisher from New Jersey, joined my for some sight fishing from Spotted Tail on the Mosquito Lagoon. We poled around looking and had some excellent shots, of which Cliff was able to convert two. They were the first reds he ever caught on fly! Nice going Cliff! The fly of choice was Electric Sushi. We had a ladyfish that took a liking to that flashy fly as well, also the first ever caught by Cliff. The weather was great and altogether it was a delightful morning.

On Wednesday, Mr. Rattle himself, Larry McGlashan, joined me for a morning's fishing on the Mosquito Lagoon. We found some fish but they were not terribly cooperative. Larry got a couple of trout of a CAL jerkbait which was of course on a Woodie's Rattling Hook. I got a trout of a CAL jig, hooked and lost a redfish on same, and got a redfish on a DOA Shrimp with a Woodie's Rattle inserted. We had numerous fish snub everything we tossed at them, some even going so far as to flip us the fin! But again it was a spectacular morning, and just great being outside.

Wednesday afternoon Dr. Rigo Carnejo and Dr. Henry Acosta joined me for an afternoon's fishing on the Mosquito Lagoon. Rigo tossed an Electric Sushi with a fly rod and had four bites from sighted reds. He missed two, stuck and lost one, and stuck another one that broke the hook of the fly. He ended up not getting a fish because of that. Henry was more efficient, only getting two bites on a gold Johnson Minnow, but boating both fish, both of which were slot reds. Late in the afternoon we encountered reasonably good numbers of tailing fish but they were extremely fussy.

Friday Dr. George Yarko graced the Spotted Tail. Thick fog greeted us upon launching, so we stayed close to the boat ramp and threw chug bugs. We got four strikes doing this, and boated two trout. Once the fog lifted we changed locations, getting several trout and ladyfish on jigs. We then went sight fishing, and once again the redfish really didn't want to take our offerings. Although it was a gorgeous morning, we got only one red, but it was a handsome fish of 27 inches. The wind started blowing and we bagged it about one PM.

My fishing schedule for next week is relatively light at this point, so it should be an easy to write report next time!

Remember- life is short. GO FISHING!

Life is great and I love my work!!
