Mosquito Lagoon report 5/28/06
Mosquito Lagoon fishing report from Spotted Tail, 5/28/06
Tarpon dates still available along the Lee County Coast!
I was home this week.
Monday Ray and Dave Martinez joined me for a morning's fishing on the Mosquito Lagoon. The weather was great, but fishing was only so-so. Ray got a red on a jerk bait first thing, the only one we got. Tossing Chug Bugs we had fairly steady action the rest of the morning, missing most strikes and getting numerous trout and even a couple of bluefish. The best fish we got was only about 20 inches long, though.
Tuesday the Oviedo High School Class of 2006, which included son Maxx, had their graduation ceremony at UCF. That pretty much tied us up for most of the day. Congratulations to all the grads out there, and best of luck with future endeavors!
Wednesday afternoon I was able to get to the Econ River for a couple hours. I am beginning to really love fishing there. The water is low and the fishing was good, the usual mix of small bass, redbellies, stumpknockers, and bluegills, all on rubber spiders and little poppers.
Thursday morning I was tied up, but got out to the Econ again in the afternoon. It was perhaps as good as I've ever seen it, or maybe I'm getting better at it. In addition to the usual sunfish I got a crappie, a bass about 12 inches long, and had a big gar eat one of the bluegills I hooked. He played tug of war for almost five minutes before letting go. The poor bluegill, while still alive, was much the worse for wear. I'm sure something else ate it in short order. Flies used included rubber spiders, small poppers, and a miniature version of the Redfish Worm.
Friday Brian and Julie Beck, fly fishers from Virginia, joined me for a day on the Mosquito Lagoon. It was fairly slow, with fish scarce and spooky on top of that. We got a single red, three black drum, and four trout to about four pounds. Flies used included the Electric Sushi and the black Redfish Worm.
This is Memorial Day weekend. Please take some time to say a prayer for and a thank you to those whose sacrifices let us live in the style to which we've become accustomed to in this wonderful country. If not for them we'd be speaking some other language, with a lot less personal freedom.
Remember- life is short. GO FISHING!
Life is great and I love my work!!
