Titusville - Saltwater Fishing Report

Space Coast report 7/29/06
Space Coast fishing report from Spotted Tail, 7/29/06
My report last week ended, "I hope to get out kayak fishing tomorrow." I did, out of River Breeze, accompanied by Joshua Keiser, a fly fisher and middle school English teacher from Pennsylvania. The morning was perfect and the fish were on, tailing, waking, and backing all over the place. We released seven reds and a trout between us, hooked and lost several more, and had the usual missed strikes, blown shots, etc. We were using Redfish Candy bendbacks. I was loaded up and out of there at 1 PM.
On Thursday Larry the Rattle Guy McGlashan and Ronnell Smith joined me on Spotted Tail for a day on the Mosquito Lagoon. It was overcast almost all morning, and the burning question in my mind was, Where did all the water go? The grass is high and the water is low, so a lot of places are inaccessible in a skiff. We saw quite a few redfish but only managed one bite on a jig, and the knot came unbuttoned. I won't say who tied that particular knot, but disavow any personal responsibility. The trout saved the day, biting well on topwaters, especially the Chug Bug. The plugs were hard to use in a lot of places though, due to the floating grass. We released all but two slot trout, and were off the water at 1 PM.
Yesterday Tom Van Horn and I went out of Port Canaveral and Tom put on a clinic for me, starting with a tarpon and then getting several kingfish, just off of Cocoa Beach. Not to be skunked though I did manage to get a bonito. Weather chased us off the water and we were back on the dock at noon. I don't know much about fishing for kings and Tom taught me a lot. Thank you, sir!
