Space Coast fishing report from Spotted Tail, 9/23/06
First off, we have upcoming events:
-The Kids Fishing Day date has been moved (for several reasons) to October 28. Please contact me for more information.
-I've had several calls and emails about my next Show and Tell. I've scheduled one for October 14. The cost is still $40.00. Visit this link http://www.spottedtail.com for more information
Goldenrods are blooming, the beauty berries are ripe, and Orion is high in the sky when I head out in the morning for the day's fishing. Summer passed away this week. Bring on the mullet!
Friday last week Dr. George Yarko joined me for a day's fishing on the Mosquito Lagoon. The water is high, and in many places dirty. The weather was spectacular. Fish were hard to find for the most part. George got a reasonable sized trout on a jerk bait, and two slot reds. We found a school of crevalle at the end of the day and I got one on a Gambler Cane Toad.
Actually, the weather was spectacular almost all week. Only Wednesday was somewhat snotty.
Monday Scott Radloff and I went out of Port Canaveral. We caught the big black mullet easily, but getting some smaller specimens turned out to be some work. Then we went looking for fish. We cruised south along the beach as far as the church steeple in Cocoa Beach without seeing anything, then went out three or four miles. We found a weed line and followed it further south for two or three miles. In all that distance we saw only two tripletail and caught one about five pounds. I missed it twice on a DOA Shrimp, and then Scott did the deed with one of the finger mullet. We released the fish.
Then we ran north back to the buoy line. Not finding anything around the buoys we tried the south jetty for a while without any success. I noticed birds diving and went to investigate. There were big schools of menhaden, and one of them had rolling tarpon. We got a sharpnose shark on the first bite, and then Scott nailed a tarpon about 120 on a mullet head. He fought the fish for 20 minutes before breaking him off. We got a couple more sharks, and decided to call it a day at about 3 PM.
Tuesday I went scouting at the north end of the Indian River. I did not see a single redfish, although there were quite a few tarpon in Patillo Creek. For the day I got two trout and a ladyfish on a Chug Bug, and missed a tarpon strike on a DOA Shrimp.
Wednesday Scott Radloff and I launched at Kennedy Point. I needed to scout that section of the Indian River. We saw very little along the east shoreline. A visit to the north power plant resulted in several nice jack crevalle, one on a TerrorEyz, the others on finger mullet. A visit to the south power plant resulted in a number of ladyfish, all caught on jigs. I saw exactly two redfish on the east side of the river in this stretch. All in all it was not a good redfish finding two days.
I was disappointed to not see any breaking fish either day. This time of year jacks, ladies, trout, and even sometimes bluefish often are found going off in the IRL.
Thursday Shawn Healy and I went scouting the north end of the Mosquito Lagoon. We searched long and hard, and while we found fish, it was a hunt-and-peck situation, with one here, one there, no big ones, and all fairly spooky. We ended up getting two reds and a ladyfish, and hardly saw any trout at all.
Friday I had Preston Jones and his buddy Bob from Pennsylvania join me for a day's fly fishing on the Mosquito Lagoon. I figured it would be a tough day catching-wise, and I was right. The weather was great, and we did see a number of fish, even had a few good shots. But those fish we made the cast to didn't eat, and we didn't get a bite. I guess that's how it goes sometimes, but I wish the water level would drop some.
Remember- life is short. GO FISHING!
Life is great and I love my work!!
