When last we met I had been out with Dave Rodefeld, on October 23. Since then I've gotten out three times, all in kayaks. We have had a run of snotty weather, and I've been writing a lot instead of trying to catch fish in less than optimal conditions.
On Thursday 10/26 I went kayak fishing on the Indian River Lagoon. I was out about three hours and other than mullet did not see a fish. I only took a few half-hearted blind casts.
On Friday 10/27 I went kayak fishing on the Mosquito Lagoon. Feeling optimistic I brought the 8 foot, three-weight Redington. I used a black #4 Clouser Minnow and did well, getting seven reds, all slot fish, and two small black drum besides.
Saturday was supposed to be the Kids Fishing Day. We could never put the planning together so we had already cancelled it for this year, but the weather was abysmal anyway. We would not have had fun.
On the 30th Tom Van Horn and I went kayak fishing in the No Motor Zone of the Banana River Lagoon. The first shot I had was at a 20 pound red, which spooked off the Kreelex fly I had on. It was the only big fish I saw. The wind came up fairly strong, close to 15 mph, so we hugged the shoreline trying to hide from it. I got four slot reds on a beautifully tied Clouser Minnow by Steve Silverio. Tom got three using a soft plastic bait with spinning tackle. We worked hard for every bite, although excepting the wind it was a beautiful day. We only saw two black drum, and did not see a trout.
I cancelled the trip scheduled for Friday because of the weather.
Yesterday I was teaching fly casting at BCC. Conditions were great for it. There's nothing like teaching fly casting in 20 knot winds. All sarcasm aside, it's always gratifying to see your students making progress. When they make progress in conditions like that it's especially gratifying.
I guess I'll see what I can do in those kinds of winds, since I have a fishing trip planned for tomorrow and Tuesday, and the forecast is for 20-25 mph winds. Wish me luck!
Remember- life is short. GO FISHING!
Life is great and I love my work!!
