Indian River Lagoon & Banana River

Titusville - Saltwater Fishing Report

This week's report on the upper Indian River and Mosquito Lagoon

from Spotted Tail, updated 8/19

Outstanding Catch Dept.- On Thursday I had the pleasure of fishing the Mosquito Lagoon with Dr. Bob Hicks of Orlando. While we didn't see any big reds, fishing for slot sized fish was outstanding. We saw something close to 1,000 fish, and had multiple double and triple hookups on fish to 10 pounds or so. We found the biggest school of reds I've seen in three years, 400 to 500 fish, and they were eating good. Not an outstanding catch perhaps, but definitely an outstanding day.

What a difference a day makes, though. Yesterday I fished Zack Grossman and Bob Killey, both from West Palm Beach. The fish were much less numerous than the day before. The 500 fish school had disappeared. Such fish as we did locate (and frankly we did see quite a few fish, including some jumbos) would not let us into casting range, or if they did they would flee when the bait/lure/fly (and we tried everything) hit the water. Working our butts off on a full day trip we got exactly one redfish. Just when you think you have it nailed the fish can ever so quickly make you humble again.

To those people who read my reports I apologize for the lateness the past couple of weeks. Home improvement projects continue to disrupt my work habits. I know I will be late again next week, since we found termites in our house and we are planning on having it tented. To those younger readers wondering when life gets easier, it doesn't. But, as R. Crumb said, you have to "Keep On Truckin'!"

Fishing is great, but catching varies. However, I still love my work!
