Titusville - Saltwater Fishing Report

This week's report on the upper Indian River and Mosquito Lagoon
from Spotted Tail, updated 10/29
First off, thanks to all of you who came to my talks at the Shallow Water Show last weekend. It was nice meeting you!
What a week for the wind man! Fifteen to 25 knots every day until the weekend, a practical joke on fishing guides, especially those specializing in fly fishing. I found enough fish when scouting the Mosquito Lagoon on Monday to feel confident I could put John Hardeman on a few the next day. I did. John got one on a gold spoon (a new product from Nemire Lures called a Red Ripper, quite a piece of equipment). Then he pulled out the long rod and both of us struggled mightily to no avail. The fish were all lying on the bottom, hard to see, looking for trouble. They saw us coming and bailed out every time. Holding the boat, fly casting accurately, both were very difficult with a steady breeze of 20 mph. We need to try it again, John.
Thursday and Friday I fished Gary Lien, a fly caster from Seattle. The wind was almost manageable on Thursday, at least for a few hours. Gary got three reds and a lovely trout of almost five pounds, all on Maxx's Redfish Fly and the Son of Clouser. Considering that he had only sight fished once before, that was quite a good day, especially considering the conditions.
Friday was tougher. The wind was blowing harder and Gary nevwe once got bit. There seemed to be fewer fish around, or it could have just been the half day didn't allow as much time to look. Anyway, we got blanked.
In spite of weeks like this...
...Fishing is great and I love my work!
