Titusville - Saltwater Fishing Report

This week's report on the upper Indian River and Mosquito Lagoon
from Spotted Tail, updated 11/19
The Spotted Tail travelled to the panhandle of Florida this week to experience fishing in St. Joe Bay and West Bay (Panama City). We were greeted by a cold front that dropped the thermometer into the upper 30"s the last morning I was there. Brrrr!
St. Joe Bay is a wonderful place to fish. Crystal clear waters and lush beds of grass support a diverse fishery there. The St. Joseph Peninsula has a state park on it, so the scenery is outstanding. In spite of the wind and cold my host, Steve Bachman (owner of the Gulf View Motel in Panama City Beach, 850.234.7131) put me on schools of redfish and big trout, as well as flounders and bluefish. While the weather precluded our catching large numbers of fish, the fact that we caught anything at all under those conditions demonstrate the quality of the fishing there. And we did catch fish- several redfish and trout while sightcasting, and flounders and bluefish while blindcasting.
Thursday in the Mosquito Lagoon showed again why they call it fishing, not catching. While we saw large numbers of redfish, the fish were extremely spooky and hard to catch. While sight fishing with fly tackle we had three bites and caught only one fish all day. The water is quite clear in most places, and still rather high.
I will be out of town next week and unable to update this page until 11/28 at the earliest.
Fishing is great and I love my work!
