Titusville - Saltwater Fishing Report

This week's report on the upper Indian River and Mosquito Lagoon
from Spotted Tail, updated 11/29
The Spotted Tail travelled to Everglades National Park last week for some snook fishing with eldest son Maxx over Thanksgiving. Actually, we took the Bang-O-Craft, a much more modest vessel than the Maverick. Fishing wasn't very good. We FOUND a LOAD of snook, in several different locations. We actually caught only two, both shorts, and one the smallest I've ever gotten on hook and line. The fish were very spooky and moody. During one two hour stretch we had a number (at least a dozen) of fish bang surface plugs. Not a single fish was hooked. Very strange. At the same tide in the same place the next day there were only a few non-cooperative fish there. Very strange.
We did get a bunch of trout, some ladyfish, several Spanish mackerel, and a most unusual catch, a 15 pound or so sawfish caught from our campsite on Highland Beach. Maxx also hooked a healthy blacktip, but with a 20 pound fluorocarbon leader that didn't last very long. We had a good time together though, father and son camping in the backcountry. I'd recommend it to anyone, fish or no.
Water in the Mosquito Lagoon is very clear in most places and dropping (finally). There are lots of slot sized reds and big trout in shallow water, sunning themselves on sandy potholes. They have not been very aggressive, but you can get them if you work at it. Schools of reds have been hard to find, I don't know why. Last year at this time there were several and they were eating good most days. We'll see what develops...
Fishing is great and I love my work!
