Titusville - Saltwater Fishing Report

This week's report on the upper Indian River and Mosquito Lagoon
from Spotted Tail, updated 12/16
This week was light on fishing trips. Monday I went wading on the west side of the Mosquito Lagoon. I saw three fish in three hours and didn't get a strike before wisely deciding to bag it.
Tuesday I traveled to Tampa to fish the bay with Capt. Dan Malzone (813-831-4052). We had outstanding action on tailing redfish to about 12 pounds, and laid up gator trout. The reds liked a small brown fly that resembled a Puff, and the trout preferred a chartreuse and white Clouser minnow. I would recommend the trip to anyone, especially fly casters.
Wednesday I went back to the west coast to visit the Stock Enhancement Research Facility, known to us anglers as the redfish hatchery. The staff is conducting research to determine the best size to raise juvenile redfish to before stocking them statewide. Called the Tampa Bay Project, this research is expected to continue for three to five years, at which point a decision will be made to go into full production, or forget the whole thing, depending on what the research discovers.
Yesterday I went scouting in the lagoon in the Bang-O-Craft. I didn't find any hordes of fish but managed to get a seven pound trout and several reds on a RipTide weedless jig head tipped with a Zipper Worm. There are some fish around.
With the Christmas holiday rapidly approaching I may not have time to report next week. If not, I hope everyone has a happy and safe holiday and finds loads of tailing redfish in the coming New Year!
Fishing is great and I love my work!
