Titusville - Saltwater Fishing Report
This week's report on the upper Indian River and Mosquito Lagoon
from Spotted Tail, updated 1/13
We haven't seen this much cold weather in central Florida in a long time. I actually had icicles hanging from my gutters. It helped the manatee counters, with over 3200 animals tallied. It was not too good for snook, tarpon, and trout, though, with fish kills on all three species being reported. I found several gator trout floating dead this week myself.
In spite of the cold, redfish have been fairly plentiful and although spooky are eating well. Monday I went out on the west side of the Indian River on a cold, overcast, and rainy day for less than two hours. I saw 6 reds, two were tailing, and I caught one on a black drum Clouser and went home.
Wednesday I went out on the west side of the Mosquito Lagoon (wow is the water LOW), again in the canoe, found about 100 reds, and caught ten or so on a variety of flies. Again, they were spooky but eating well.
Friday I took fly casters Joe Mulson and Barry Kent out. We saw a fair number of both reds and trout but never got a bite. The wind was blowing hard, making casting and boat handling difficult and clouds made visibility difficult. It's hard to catch a fish when you spot it and it's less than a rod length away! Better luck next time...
Fishing is great and I love my work!
