Titusville - Saltwater Fishing Report

This week's report on the upper Indian River and Mosquito Lagoon
from Spotted Tail, updated 1/21
The toughest week of my professional fishing career just ended, and on the bright side fishing can't possibly get any worse. Last Sunday I fished Joe Ronan from Pennsylvania and his friend Mike, from Colorado, in the Mosquito Lagoon. Although they were somewhat hard to find we were into fish for much of the day, both trout and redfish. We did not raise a single fish, however.
Tuesday I went to the Banana River Manatee Refuge to do some scouting. I found very few redfish but quite a few black drum. I managed to convince two of them to take a black drum Clouser minnow, and the one fish I landed was at least 30 pounds.
Wednesday I fished Dr. Lou Payor of Orlando and Thursday Mark Marsh of Jacksonville, both in the no motor zone. Both are excellent fly casters and both had a lot of good shots at big black drum. The fish were indifferent to all offerings and each angler only had one strike all day, which they both unfortunately missed.
Friday I fished Dr. George Yarko of Orlando. The wind was howling, but I still thought we'd be able to boat some fish in the Mosquito Lagoon. All my favorite spots were devoid of fish and we only saw five redfish the entire day. We did get one 20" fish on a RipTide Weedless Jig. None of the trout we saw (not that many, either) would bite. In spite of the occasional week like this...
Fishing is great and I love my work!
