Titusville - Saltwater Fishing Report

This week's report on the upper Indian River and Mosquito Lagoon
from Spotted Tail, updated 5/13
Now booking TARPON trips for May and June for the SW Florida coast!
Ah, tarpon season. A maddening time of year. I don't know of anything you can do that's more boring than staring at fishless water for hours, or sometimes days. But when the 'poons show up, look out. I don't know of anything in fishing that works up such a huge head of adrenaline, either.
Wednesday past the silver kings showed up big time in Captiva Pass, hundreds of fish rolling all day long. Ed and Chris Lawrence and I saw almost every boat around us hook at least one fish, and several had multiple hookups. All were livelining threadfin herring. We had two solid strikes, both of which were missed. We finished the day with one little tunny, one tripletail on fly, but zero tarpon.
Thursday Doug Lane and John Horton joined me on Spotted Tail. We searched miles of beach and Captiva Pass. We saw narry a tarpon and got a few Spanish mackerel on fly. Friday we went looking again. Fishing was slow. We got a couple of flounder, a few small grouper, some Spanish, and then- we found a school of tarpon on the beach. It took an hour of stalking but Horton hooked up a fish I estimate at 140 on a Cockroach. After an hour's battle and eight jumps Mr. Horton intentionally broke it off.
Yesterday Jean Conelli graced the 'Tail. She got a little tunny and had several tripletail shots. My buddy Rick joined us in a search for poon and we found a load. Jean was unable to hookup in spite of several great opportunities, but Rick's angler hooked a 120 which almost jumped in the boat with us, more excitement than even I like.
Fishing's been good and I still have dates open. Call soon, tarpon only come by a couple months a year!
Fishing is great, and I love my work!
