Indian River Lagoon & Banana River

Titusville - Saltwater Fishing Report

For my three fans in the Low Country, I'll be speaking at the Shallow Water Expo in Charleston on Saturday and Sunday and to the Sea Island Fly Fishers in Beaufort on Monday night. Of course I'll have my books for sale. Stop by and say hello!

It never ceases to amaze me how much difference a few days can make when it comes to fish behavior. Last week (between Christmas and New Years) I took son Maxx and his friend Brian Jaye on a two night canoe/kayak camping trip in Canaveral National Seashore. We found almost no single fish, and the schools we found were as jittery as redfish ever get. Of course half the free world took the week off and there was heavy boat traffic and fishing pressure, even in places where I seldom see power boats. We caught three rat reds in three days, and only had a couple of missed strikes between us. We also had a raccoon steal a bag of marshmallows from right under our noses. The weather was spectacular, and all in all we had a wonderful trip, even without the marshmallows.

Yesterday I took the kayak out onto the Indian River Lagoon. When I saw how slick the water was BIG FISH came to mind. I went looking in one of my favorite places and sure enough, there were a couple hundred big boys lollygagging around, fins in the air, loving life, at least until I showed up. I missed the first two strikes, broke off two fish, had the hook pull on one, and released one a tad under 20 pounds. I tried various flies, but the best one was a small bunker pattern tied with SexyFiber. Then the wind came up and the fish disappeared. It was very a spectacular morning.

Remember- life is short. GO FISHING!

Life is also great and I love my work!!
