Titusville - Saltwater Fishing Report

Spotted Tail Report, 1/15/05
This week’s fishing report from Spotted Tail, updated 1/15/05
I thought I would enjoy writing this particular report, and I was looking forward to it. However, more on that later.
I was at the Shallow Water Expo in Charleston on Saturday and Sunday, and spoke to the Sea Island Fly Fishers in Beaufort on Monday night. The show was good, the oyster roast that the CCA put on Saturday night was outstanding, and the Sea Island Fly Fishers are a wonderful group of gentlemen. I look forward to my visit next year.
On Monday and Tuesday Steve Baker and Don Traskos took me out onto a couple of saltwater ponds in South Carolina to try for the 20 pound plus redfish that live there. I had my leader break at a knot on the only bite we had in two days. I made seven flawless presentations to seven different fish and was met with indifference or the fish fled in terror. My friends didn't get a bite. It was disappointing, but there will be other days.
Wednesday Maxx and I went out on Mosquito Lagoon to scout for my charter on Thursday. We checked the east side from Eddy Creek to Bird Island, seeing only a handful of fish. We had a pretty good south wind, pushing 15 knots. The water at the south end was dirty. We did get about 20 trout and three redfish by blind casting, Maxx with a DOA Glow Shrimp and I with a RipTide weedless shrimp. Most of the fish were short, though.
Thursday Dr. Mike Bone, a fly fisher from California, cast from the deck of Spotted Tail. We looked in the Indian River, where we saw nothing, and then tried in the Mosquito Lagoon. We searched hard in cloudy, windy conditions (it was blowing close to 20 knots when we got off the water) on both sides of the lagoon, starting at Haulover Canal and ending up by Eldora. I saw exactly three redfish. Mike had three strikes, missing one and boating two marginally sized seatrout for all his efforts.
It rained hard all day yesterday, and was windy and overcast today. I stayed home. So fishing this week wasn't particularly productive. Next week is a new situation, though!
Remember- life is short. GO FISHING!
Life is also great and I love my work!!
