Titusville - Saltwater Fishing Report

Spotted Tail Report, Florida Space Coast, 1/22/05
This week’s fishing report from Spotted Tail, updated 1/22/05
Due to nasssty weather at the start of the week I only got out three times this week.
On Wednesday I made a solo trip to the St. Johns River in search of the elusive American shad. I launched near my home, at the SR 46 river crossing east of Geneva. I had received a report from Tom Van Horn that the shad were thick near the mouth of the Econ, but I only garnered a single hookup (on a red and white fly) in about an hour and a half. I spoke to Bill Barnard and his friend John, who I met at the ramp while taking out, and they had hooked four and boated two. Another gentleman told me he thought the cold weather had pushed them out and they'd be back as the water temperature rose. We'll see. I may try later today.
Thursday Joe Mulson and I launched the Bang-O-Craft at River Breeze and went hunting for fish. We found bunches of reds, although no trout and not everywhere we looked. We found a shallow slough that was filled with reds. I got the first one on a DOA Glow Shrimp; then we went wading with fly rods. Joe used a black bunny booger, I a brown sili-shrimp. We pulled at least 15 fish from that hole, it was awesome! We found a shallow shoreline a while later that had a school of about 50 fish, and then numerous singles and small groups. We got four more on the Glow Shrimp. Altogether a beautiful and productive day.
Yesterday I fished Dr. George Yarko and his friend Paul, spin fishermen from central Florida. It was a beautiful if somewhat chilly day, with great visibility. The slough that was so productive the previous day yielded a single fish. The shoreline from the previous day still held them, though, and we got five redfish there, the largest of which was 30 inches. We used DOA Glow Shrimp and cut mullet. We also found a slough that was packed with trout (I finally figured out then where they had all gone) that were so spooky, every time the lure hit the water mud would churn up and wakes would shoot every which way. We did get one red at that spot, but didn't hook a trout. I think a stealthy approach on foot with a fly rod would have worked, but we didn't try that.
Remember- life is short. GO FISHING!
Life is also great and I love my work!!
