Spotted Tail report 1/30/05, Mosquito Lagoon
This week’s fishing report from Spotted Tail, updated 1/30/05
Ah, winter weather. In Florida, 'tis often a wonderful thing. It was not on Sunday, though, and on Monday I cancelled my scheduled trip. The forecast high was 52 degrees.
Tuesday, however, I fished Dr. Dave Azar, a dentist, part time fishing guide, and fly fisher from New York City. The Mosquito Lagoon was our spot of choice. It was chilly, yes, and we didn't find fish everywhere we looked, but we did find fish. Using a pattern I call the Kritter, Dave put three slot reds in the boat, one trout of about 20 inches, missed two strikes, and had numerous refusals and missed shots. The high temperature was only about 63 degrees, so you can certainly catch fish on days that are something less than sweltering.
Thursday Shawn Healy, Tom Van Horn, and myself launched Tom's Maverick at River Breeze and went looking for fish, with quite a bit of success. The first spot we checked was loaded with big, spooky trout. Like last time out, we could not get them to bite anything we tried. I still haven't tried wading with a fly rod, though. We left the trout and went to a redfish spot. The fish were there and we caught them fairly steadily for about two and a half hours, mostly on DOA Shrimp (Nite Glow and chartreuse) and a RipTide weedless jig head with an Exude slimy slug. The fish ranged in size from 15 inch rats to a length of 606 millimeters (sounds impressive, doesn't it?) That fish weighed five and a half pounds (I wish I had that in grams).
Friday and yesterday I walked the aisles at the Fly Fishing Show in Somerset, NJ. Although I've heard a lot about it, I hadn't ever attended this show before. It is an awesome show, the best one I've ever been to. I learned at least a dozen new fly patterns, and stood and watched tiers including Tim Borski, Enrico Puglisi, Roman Moser, Jack Gartside, Mike Martinek, Ben Furimsky and more. The down side was being in New Jersey with single digit temperatures. Sure made me glad to get home.
Remember- life is short. GO FISHING!
Life is also great and I love my work!!
