I'm writing the report a little early this week since I'm going on a canoe camping trip tomorrow. Our angling results will be in next week's report.
Monday and Tuesday Michael Grant, a fine gentleman from Washington DC, graced the Spotted Tail. Monday we visited the St. Johns River searching for American Shad. Yes we did find a load of them at the mouth of the Econlockhatchee River, upstream from SR 46. We got them on both flies and ultralight spinning tackle, two and three at a time sometimes. Michael had a tandem rig with a shad dart and a size 0 Reflecto spoon. The shad really liked it. We probably got 40 or 50 altogether.
Tuesday he wanted to try the Mosquito Lagoon, so we went looking for redfish. We didn't look very long. I stayed in one spot all day. We got 15 or so reds to 25" and two nice trout using three different lures: a 1/4 ounce gold Johnson Minnow, a 4" DOA CAL jerkbait, and a RipTide Weedless Shrimp.
Wednesday I had to get the camping permit for the upcoming trip at the ranger station by Turtle Mound, so I launched the johnboat at River Breeze and went and got it. Of course I did some scouting for the canoe trip as long as I was out. I was happy to see the water had dropped almost a foot, making much better conditions for hand powered boats. But compared to the previous day down south there were very few fish around. I got one slot red on a Bass Assassin and hooked and lost one on a chartreuse Clouser minnow.
Remember- life is short. GO FISHING!
Life is also great and I love my work!!
