Spotted Tail Mosquito Lagoon report 3/19/05
This week’s fishing report from Spotted Tail, updated 3/19/05
Now booking tarpon dates for May and June along the Lee Island Beaches!
What a week it was…
Last Sunday Tony and Thorn May, a fly fishing father and son team, cast to redfish ALL DAY and didn't catch one. One missed strike, caught one trout, done. Remember when they used to eat? We were on the west side of the Mosquito Lagoon.
Monday fly caster Terry Rusthoven and I were in the same spot when a rude young man in a blue Ranger flats boat poled right in on us. As politely as I could I told him that I was upset that he did that. His response was, "A lot of people don't like you John and there's a reason for that." First of all, you could probably say that about most people (including him). Second of all, people who don't like me may not like my personality or my introvertedness (is that a word?), but they seldom have a problem with my behavior on the water. I can only remember a handful of times when I've been chided by someone for getting too close, and it was usually an honest error on my part, not my willfully being a jerk.
Anyhow, Terry managed to get two reds to ten pounds by blindcasting under overcast skies, using a deerhair mullet pattern that had been given to me by Ron Novitsky. Thank you, Ron!
Tuesday Terry and I were at it again. We had clear skies and a northeast wind of about 15 knots. He had great fly fishing for seatrout, boating five between three and five pounds, losing three others, and missing at least a half dozen strikes. Terry was tossing size 1/0 SexyFly bendbacks. It was the best day this winter for fly fishing for trout, by far.
Wednesday and Thursday I had fly fishers Terry and Gina Lyons, down from Michigan for a little fishing o the Mosquito Lagoon. They got crummy weather, overcast Wednesday and pouring rain on Thursday. Wednesday Terry got four or five redfish and three or four trout by blind casting with a Rattle Rouser. While all of the fish were legal, none was particularly sizeable. Thursday we fished all day in that rain. Fishing wasn't great, but we had several shots at tailing reds. Terry managed two 24 inch reds on the Rattle Rouser as well as a 24 inch trout on the same fly. He also got another 24 inch trout on a Floozy popper. Soaked to the skin, we bagged it just before 3 PM.
Friday I was supposed to fish but we called the day because of the record cold temperatures, strong winds, and overcast skies.
Today Randy and Nick Corbi, a father-son team from Hadley, Massachusetts, joined me for some Mosquito Lagoon fishing. Hey, it ain't supposed to be this cold in March! The wind was 10 to 15 out of the northeast, and I doubt if hit 70 out there. We found a school of big boys and Nick's cast was perfect. A fish tailed on his jig and the battle was joined, to be won by 16 year old Nick. The fish was a magnificent 39 inch red, a tagged fish, probably 20 pounds, Nick's biggest fish ever. Congratulations, young man! Other than that fishing was fairly tough. Several other fish were hooked (smaller ones, that is) but the only other fish to see the boat was a 15 inch red caught with an Exude.
Remember- life is short. GO FISHING!
Life is also great and I love my work!!
